SESSION THREE: Art, Music, Writing — and the Questions That Come With It.
PRESENTED BY Chris Gamrat, Associate Teaching Professor, College of Information Sciences and Technology
In this interactive session, we’ll explore how generative AI tools are reshaping creativity across art, music, writing, and design. Drawing from classroom experiences in Penn State’s IST 130 course, we’ll look at how people are using AI to brainstorm, prototype, and refine ideas, while also learning to think critically about originality, authorship, and responsibility.
Together, we’ll examine: - Where inspiration ends, and authorship begins - How bias shows up in creative AI systems - The ethical choices individuals, educators, and communities face - What it means to be creative in the era of generative AI
This session balances hands-on exploration with thoughtful discussion. We’ll see real examples, ask hard questions, and consider how to use AI in ways that enhance human creativity rather than replace it. No technical background required—just curiosity and a willingness to think critically about the future of creativity.

This is the third session in a four-part series designed and hosted by the Penn State Nittany AI Alliance and Connect Happy Valley to introduce people to artificial intelligence—what it is, what it isn’t, and why it matters in everyday life. Created for thoughtful citizens rather than coders, the conversation uses clear, jargon-free language and real-world examples to explore how AI is already shaping work, creativity, small businesses, and communities.
