Due to weather, tonight's event is cancelled. The next Brazilian Immersion session will be on Sunday, March 22nd!
While winter settles in Central Pennsylvania, Pine Grove Hall invites you to feel the warmth, rhythm, and joy of Brazilian Carnival.
Session #1 - The Origins of Samba This opening session explores samba’s Afro-Brazilian roots, its rhythm patterns and instruments, and its transformation into an urban phenomenon. Pepe introduces the rise of samba schools, carnival street parades, and the traditions that shaped samba into a national symbol of Brazil.
Brazilian Immersion is a four-part performance–history–retrospective series led by Rio de Janeiro-born and bred songwriter, guitarist, percussionist, and educator Dr. Pepe Barcellos. Hosted in Pine Grove Hall’s upstairs listening room, these intimate and interactive encounters blend storytelling, live music, singing, body movement, and percussion playing.
Across four Sunday gatherings, Pepe traces the roots of samba, bossa nova, and other Brazilian musical traditions, connecting Afro-Brazilian cultural history, iconic recordings, carnival street culture, and his own experiences performing and teaching Brazilian music around the world. Whether you come to listen, move, sing, or simply soak in the atmosphere, these sessions are designed to make everyone feel included and welcome.
This event takes place in our 2nd-floor listening room. Please note there is no handicapped access. Dinner and bar service available.
